Politics: Prakash Chik Baraik Says Public Mandate Prompted His Rajya Sabha Resignation

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik has given his first public reaction after resigning from the Upper House, stating that his decision was guided by the mandate and sentiments of the people of West Bengal. In an interview, Baraik said that the people had not given TMC a mandate in the state, and therefore he felt it was inappropriate to continue holding his position. He emphasized that in a democracy, the public is supreme and elected representatives should respect the will of the people. He also clarified that he had not spoken with TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee before resigning. When asked whether he would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Baraik declined to reveal his future political plans, saying that “time will tell.” Speaking about governance, he argued that both the state and the central governments should work together for development. He referred to proposed infrastructure projects such as a medical college, an AIIMS facility, an airport at Hasimara, and improved rail connectivity as examples of development initiatives. Baraik also stressed that welfare schemes meant for the poor should benefit citizens regardless of political differences. However, he avoided commenting on allegations related to corruption or other political controversies.
