A brutal heatwave has tightened its grip across North India, with the India Meteorological Department warning that extreme temperatures and severe heat conditions are likely to continue from May 21 to May 27. From Delhi to Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and central India, people are struggling to cope as temperatures soar between 45°C and 48°C in several cities. According to weather officials, the national capital and surrounding regions are witnessing one of the harshest heat spells of the season. Day temperatures in many areas are expected to remain between 45°C and 47°C, accompanied by strong hot winds and dangerously warm nights. In several cities, nighttime temperatures are also reported to be around three degrees above normal, worsening discomfort for residents. Cities such as Bathinda and Nagpur recorded temperatures near 47°C, while Banda emerged among the hottest places with temperatures touching 48°C. Severe heat conditions were also reported in Delhi, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer. The extreme weather has sharply increased demand for bottled water, ice cubes, and cooling products. Vendors in Delhi reported that sales of mineral water and ice supplies have more than doubled compared to normal days. Hospitals across affected states are also preparing for a rise in heatstroke and dehydration cases. Special heatwave wards, air-conditioned beds, ORS supplies, and emergency medical teams have been deployed in several districts, including Kanpur. Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping out during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take special care of children, elderly citizens, and pregnant women.
